    The Hijikawa River

    • Upper reaches
    • Middle reaches
    • Lower reaches
The Hijikawa River originates in Masanobu, Uwacho, Higashiuwa-gun (Alt. 460m), runs down south on the Uwa Basin, then runs eastward, pass through the narrow mountain area, streams straight through the Ozu Basin, and finally flows into Iyonada.

The size of the drainage area is 1,210 square kilometers across one city, 11 towns, and two villages. It the largest first class river in Ehime prefecture, stretching over 103 km including tributaries such as the Kurosegawa, Funatogawa, Kawabegawa, Odagawa, and Yaochigawa rivers.

As to the natural conditions, the river is geographically unique, when compared with other rivers, as the 90% of the drainage area is on mountains. The only the plains are Uwa and Nomura in upper reaches and the Ozu Basin in the middle reaches, and with the exception of such, all the way down to the river mouth the mountains reach close to the river.

The distance between the source and the mouth is only 18 linear kilometers, for the stream makes a big-angle turn like an elbow (hiji in Japanese), which is said to have given the river this name.

    Mandarin ducks

    Mandarin duck
More than 3000 mandarin ducks fly over to Lake Kanogawa, which make up about 60% of all the mandarin ducks coming to Japan. Mandarin ducks come in around January and rest wings until about February, passing the winter while eating nuts around the lake.

In addition, mallards, teals, and spotbill ducks fly over to Lake Kanogawa, making the surrounding area like a wild bird paradise. The observation spots of mandarin ducks are the foot of the Otani Bridge and around the big bridge of Lake Kanogawa. Let’s watch these lovely birds quietly not to startle them.

    Seas of clouds

    Sea of clouds
Seas of clouds--majestic and mysterious natural phenomena—can be seen during the time between October and February in some mornings of fine weather for a short climb of a small hill.
This photo was taken from Kageji district of Otani in the direction of Yokohayashi district, and Mt. Takao in the center toward Koei is filled with fog. It may be a good idea to stay in a hotel or lodge overnight and get up early to see such a majestic sea of clouds.
